Quick Summary

Challenges Faced by Students with ASD in Secondary (High) School

Secondary school is often very different from primary school for a student with ASD. Depending on the school some of the variations may be:

  • Amount of support often dramatically decreases which can cause confusion to the student and the family.
  • Inconsistencies between home and school the expected level of independence.
  • Interpersonal connections become more important.
  • General lack of knowledge of how the world works.
  • Often less incidental learning has happened for these students because they are so literal.
  • Teachers working out if the behaviour is just teenage stuff or being ASD.
  • Technology can also be a challenge.
  • A study by Hedges et al (2015) found that there was a general lack of knowledge, preparation and adequate supports for students with ASD at the High School level.

This Book is for the Teaching Staff and Carers of Secondary School age children
